Artist Statement

When I start a painting, I begin by sketching the subject directly on canvas, in paint, from memory. As I progress, and my work starts to look like that thing which I’m trying to represent, I turn it  upside-down, and continue working on it simply as an composition, so that I can then focus on its abstract elements (the lines, tones, colors, shapes and textures)  until they feel ‘right’ to me.
